Hyderabad, July 12, 2017: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority(HMDA) is working on a proposal to develop two islands on the Hussain Sagar Lake between Sanjeevaiah Park and Jal Vihar informed T. Chiranjeevulu, Metropolitan Commissioner, HMDA.

Interacting with the media on the sidelines of the Awards Distribution Function of Telangana State Open State Sailing Championships at The Yacht Club of Hyderabad at Sanjeevaiah Park in the city Wednesday evening, Chirajeevulu stated that these two Islands each spread over an acre land will come up in next four to five months.

Chirenjeevelu was the Chief Guest at the Awards presentation ceremony.

These Islands will be built with the dredged sediments of the lake. Already these dredged sediments are deposited and mounted in one side of the lake which can be seen he stated.

Our idea is use small land pockets existing in the lake and pile up sediments collected from the lake bed through dredging and develop islets and greenery on it so that people can go around the place and have an all together a different kind of an experience of the lake. There is no extra cost involved in doing it so, he informed and added that the heaps of sediments with edges properly contoured will not take much cost or effort. The shifting of the mud collected from the bed of the lake is more tedious. Also it is a problem because it is highly toxic in nature. Another advantage is that since the sediment from the lake itself is used and no external material is brought into the lake to create these two islands.

Earlier addressing the Sailors who came from six states—Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Chiranjeevulu said Hussain Sagar lake is one of the attractions of the 400 plus year old Hyderabad city. No other city can boast of a lake in the middle of the city like Hyderabad. It is a huge challenge to maintain the Hussain Sagar Lake which is spread over 5.7 square kilometers. Sailing is equally a tough sport. Many are afraid of water. It needs lot of courage and conviction to be a sailor. Hope these championships will produce some world class sailors in near future, he said.

We are trying our best to keep the lake clean, but, still some effluents are being sent into the lake particularly during the night time by some industries, Chiranjeevulu informed.

Dadi Bhote, Vice President of Telangana Sailing Association, Anil Desai, member of the Association, Brig G.S. Julka, Dr. P. Rajaram, Suheim Sheik, Founder President of The Yacht Club of Hyderabad graced the function.
