Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar organising a special programme to distribute grants for the more development of infrastructure and quality education.
Amritsar, January 14, 2015: Guru Nanak Dev University organised a special programme to distribute grants for the more development of infrastructure and quality education of its government affiliated colleges under Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) or National Higher Education Mission. Today ten government colleges received a grant of Rs.25 lacs and Guru Nanak Dev University received a grant of Rs.2.5 crore.
Surjit Singh Rakhra, Higher Education Minister presided over this special programme and distrubuted cheques to the Prof. Brar and principals of govt. colleges. Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.S. Brar welcomed the chief guest and others. Dr. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Registrar presented vote of thanks. Dr. G.S. Brar, Additional Director RUSA gave details about this Mission. Dr. Roshan Sunkaria, Principle Secretary, Higher Education was also present.
Rakhra said that Punjab is the among the few states which adopted RUSA scheme. Under this grants with 65:35 ratio would be released to government colleges and universities. He said that 38 govt. colleges and universities shall receive the grants under this scheme. GNDU got 2.5 crores and each govt. college got 25 lac rupees as the first installment under this scheme.
He said that this grant would be utilised by the colleges and Universities for the more upliftment higher education and infrastructure to cope the challenges of international market. He said that though we progressed a lot during recent years but much is needed to be done in the field of higher education as compare to developed countries.
He said that the need of hour is to provide vocational training to our youth. This would not only curb the drug abuse but also they could get adequate jobs. He said that government would provide all required support for the betterment of the higher education in the state.
The minister while giving his remarks appreciated the high academic standard set by the Guru Nanak Dev University in the recent years. Adoption of sick govt. institute and converting them into sustainable modern centers of learning is an example for many to emulate in the state. He congratulated the Vice-Chancellor, staff, teachers and students of this University and encouraged others to upgrade and achieve.
While thanking the Minister, Prof. Brar said that today we need to change our mindset for the changes happening around us. He said that our youth and teachers should always be ready to accept the new technology and get rid of orthodox tradition. He said that we should be open for constructive change by making optimum use of modern technology.
Sunkaria said that is a holistic scheme of development for higher education in India initiated in 2013 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. He said that the centrally sponsored scheme aims at providing strategic funding to higher educational institutions throughout the country. Funding is provided by the central ministry through the state governments and union territories (UT), which in coordination with the central Project Appraisal Board will monitor the academic, administrative and financial advancements taken under the scheme. A total of 316 state public universities and 13,024 colleges will be covered under it, he added.
