Jalandhar, November 30, 2012: Nehchal Sandhu, Director Intelligence Bureau-cum-Chairman, All India Police Sports Control Board formally closed the 6th All India Police Shooting (Sports) Championship-2012 at a colourful and impressive closing ceremony organised at outdoor stadium, PAP Complex Jalandhar today. More than 400 participants, both men and women, from all over the country participated and contested in 17 events from November 26-30.

The championship was organised under the guidance and patronage of Sumedh Singh, Director General of Police, Punjab by the organising committee chaired by Gurdev Singh Sahota, Additional Director General of Police, Armed Battalions, Punjab.

Sumedh Singh formally welcomed the chief guest, senior officers, representatives of All India Police Sports Control Board, team managers, officials, children, media persons and participants.

Nehchal Sandhu, Director Intelligence Bureau on the behalf of All India Police Sports Control Board placed on record deep appreciation for flawless manner in which this championship was conducted under the guidance of Director General of Police, Punjab  Sumedh Singh and his team of officers. He expressed happiness at the growing level of participation of police shooters at national and international level since the first edition of All India Police Shooting (Sports) Championship in 2007 hosted by BSF at CSWT Indore. Police sports persons have made the nation proud by winning medals at Olympic Games held this year at London. Yogeshwar Dutt, DSP, Haryana Police won Bronze medal in men’s wrestling (60 Kg weight category) and M. C. Mary Kom, DSP (now SP) from Manipur Police, the  only  lady  boxer  from  India, won Bronze medal.

Also this year, a record number of six police sportspersons namely Vikash Krishan (Boxing), Sardar Singh (Hockey), Anup Kumar (Kabaddi) all from Haryana Police, Yashpal Solanki (Judo) from Punjab Police, Ng. Sonia Chanu (Weightlifting) from UP Police and M. Bimoljit Singh (Wu-Shu) of CRPF, have been conferred with the prestigious “Arjuna Award” for the year 2012. So far, total 82 police sportspersons have received Arjuna Award from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.

The march past was led by the champion team followed by participating teams. Punjab Police band played harmonious tunes and amused the gathering. The chief guest gives away prizes to the winners and blessed the position holders and participants. Beautiful fireworks, tent pegging show, band display and motorcycle show enthralled the audience.
