CMC Hospital Ludhiana held a Ground Breaking Ceremony of artificial limbs workshop

Ludhiana, October 16, 2017: Christian Medical College Hospital, Ludhiana today organized a Ground breaking ceremony of Prosthesis and Orthosis P & O (Brace shop) for Calipers, crutches, walkers, cervical and lumbar brace, Splints, gaiters, Upper limbs /Lower limbs prosthesis Wheelchairs and W/C cushions at CMC Unit at Hambran by The Department of PMR (Physical Medicine and Rehablitation) C.M.C & Hospital Ludhiana. It is being sponsored by CBM which is an international Christian development organization, committed to improving the quality of life of people with disabilities in the poorest communities of the world.

CBM addresses poverty as a cause and a consequence of disability, and works in partnership to create an inclusive society for all.

On this occasion Dr. Abraham G Thomas, Director CMC Hospital, Ludhiana and Dr. Sara Verghese chairperson of CBM were present among other dignitaries from CMC hospital, along with SardarManjeet Singh and Bachitar Singh, Sarpanch of Hambran Village were present for the ground breaking ceremony .

Speaking about this project Dr. Abraham G Thomas said CMC is opening this Brace workshop with a vision to be able to improve the quality of life of differently abled person (divyang) by using all these products improving their functions, modifying the environment (surroundings), giving required splints and facilitating community re-integration. Differently abled persons now called as Divyang are being treated under the department of PMR, here at CMC Hospital, Ludhiana and once this workshop is completed the people of the region will be able to get Prosthesis and Orthosis artificial limbs.

Dr. Santosh Mathangi, HOD of the PMR department said, that the Prosthesis is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part, which may be lost through trauma, disease, or congenital conditions.Prosthetic amputee rehabilitation is primarily coordinated by a prosthetist and an inter-disciplinary team of health care professionals including psychiatrists, surgeons, physical therapists, and occupational therapists and CMC has all the facilities under same roof. Explaining further he said, no matter the cause of patient’s limb absence, the solution is broadly similar. In simple terms, this workshop will produce artificial limbs which will aim to provide a prosthesis which will enable the patient to carry on with your normal day-to-day activities. Depending on the level of limb loss, patient’s general health and fitness and his/her expectations, this could range from running or other sports, to returning to employment, to walking a few kilometers, to simply being able to get around the house. According to him, once these artificial limbs are available, the Divyang patients from the region will be benefited.
