CAPT AMARINDER GOVT INVITES PUBLIC OBJECTIONS ON TRANSPORT & ANTI-CARTELISATION POLICIES

Chandigarh, July 24, 2017: The Punjab government has invited objections from the general public on the proposed state transport scheme, 2017, in order to make it more broadbased, rational and transparent. Similar objections have been invited on the draft policy to check cartelization of goods transport carriages, for which draft notification has also been issued.
People have been given 30 days to submit their objections, as per the draft notification approved by Council of Ministers and published in the official gazette by the state Transport Department.
Disclosing this here today, a spokesperson of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh's office said that people can file their objections in the office of Principal Secretary Transport, Punjab Civil Secretariat-2, Sector-9, Chandigarh. All such objections would be duly considered by the state government in accordance with the provisions of the law to make the scheme more effective, he added. Based on the objections received, the department would further fine-tune the new scheme keeping in view the interests of all stakeholders.

The objective of the new transport scheme was to provide level playing field to all the players, thus bringing in transparency, accountability and fairness in the allotment of routes for state transport undertakings, inter-state routes and national highways within the state of Punjab, besides state highways/main district roads/other district roads. The scheme also provides for the regularization of the time table to provide equitable time for stoppage to both state transport and private buses. It provides for monitoring of the movement of the buses using GPS.
It may be further noted that the Captain Amarinder government has vowed to end cartelization of the transport sector, promoted by the previous government to further their vested interests during the run up to the Assembly polls in the state. The new transport scheme would pave a way to free transport from the clutches of a few transporters, having political clout in the previous government.
