15th annual athletic meet marks its opening at CGC Landran

Chandigarh: Fostering the spirit of sportsmanship among the young minds and the faculty, CGC Landran inaugurated its 15th Annual Athletic Meet in the campus. The event was declared open by the Chief Guest Mr. Vijay Kumar, Indian Weightlifting coach and the recipient of Dronacharya Award, along with the Guest of Honor Mr. Sandeep Kumar (Olympian) who released the tricolour balloons as a mark of commencement. Over 1000 students of the institution are participating in the 2-day meet.

The first day of the event saw the athletes participate in 100 mts, 200 mts, 400 mts, 800 mts and 1500 mts races, Relay Race (400 mts), Discus Throw, Shot Put, Javelin Throw, Triple Jump, High Jump and Long Jump.

The inauguration ceremony commenced with a magnificent parade by the NCC cadets followed by a beautiful procession by the student groups of different departments. Subsequent to this, a prize distribution ceremony was conducted to felicitate the sportspersons who have achieved meritorious positions in the various Inter-college sports tournaments conducted by the IKGPTU throughout the Session 2019-20. Among these, student teams from CGC Landran has stood first in Chess(Men), Cross Country (Men & Women), Weightlifting (Men), Powerlifting (Men), Best Physique (Men).

Encouraging students to imbibe sports as an integral part of their routine, Chief Guest Mr. Vijay Kumar said, “Sports contribute towards making students focussed and instil aspects of leadership, patience and team work among them. Also, taking up 3-4 sessions of weightlifting in a week can help youth cope up with stress in their day-to-day lives.” Further praising the Government’s initiatives in the promotion of sports, he said “Khelo India is increasingly assisting students to prepare themselves for global events like Olympics and thus, more and more youngsters should be a part of it.”

Chairman (CGC) Satnam Singh Sandhu and President (CGC) Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal extended a warm welcome to the guests and congratulated all the participants. They further advised students to seek inspiration from the esteemed guests who have made their mark in the field of sports.
